Waterfowl Management Technician
Job Length: August 17, 2026 – January 9, 2027
Job Term: 1 full-time seasonal contract (irregular hours including early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays)
Duties
The Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters Membership (OFAH Membership), in partnership with Long Point Provincial Park and the Long Point Waterfowlers' Association, is seeking a Waterfowl Management Technician to support the operation and maintenance of the Long Point Waterfowl Management Unit (LPWMU).
Reporting to the Long Point Assistant Park Superintendent, this position plays a key role in delivering a safe, efficient, and high-quality hunting experience for waterfowl hunters using the Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for hunter registration, permit administration, equipment and facility maintenance, data collection, and providing exceptional service to Unit users.
Unit Services & Administration:
- Verify that hunters possess all required federal and provincial licences, permits, and documentation before issuing hunting permits
- Collect, record, and maintain hunter registration information and harvest data ensuing all bird species are correctly identified
- Ensure all hunting activity is conducted in accordance with established regulations and Unit procedures
- Sell Provincial Park permits and hunting-related items, including processing cash, debit, and credit transactions
- Prepare bank deposits, take deposits to the bank, and balance accounts
- Answer phones, respond to emails, and provide information to hunters and the public
- Maintain accurate records and databases related to hunt participation, harvest information, and Unit operations
Operations & Maintenance:
- Repair and maintain hunting blinds, signage, lights, channel markers, boats, and other equipment used throughout the Unit
- Assist with facility, equipment, and property maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operations
- Operate boats, trailers, pumps, UTVs, and hand tools in accordance with safety procedures
- Conduct regular inspections of Unit infrastructure and report maintenance concerns
- Support seasonal operational activities and special projects as required
Field Work & Program Support:
- Monitor hunter activity and ensure all permit holders exit the Unit before daily closure
- Assist with field-based data collection and reporting
- Work outdoors in varied weather conditions and challenging environmental settings
- Support conservation, stewardship, and operational initiatives related to the management of the Unit
Qualifications
Education:
Post-secondary education in:
- Biology
- Fish & Wildlife
- Environmental Science
- Natural Resources Management
- Or equivalent work-related experience in the relevant fields.
Skills & Experience:
You bring:
- Strong knowledge of federal and provincial hunting regulations
- Experience hunting migratory birds and identifying waterfowl species
- Experience building, repairing, and maintaining duck blinds
- Experience operating boats, trailers, chainsaws, pumps, UTVs, and other field equipment
- Mechanical aptitude and equipment maintenance experience
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic accounting and cash-handling experience
- Strong organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database management
- Experience maintaining records and preparing reports
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Assets (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience using GPS and GIS applications
- Previous experience in conservation, parks, wildlife management, or outdoor recreation operations
Eligibility
This role includes both office and field work. You should be comfortable with:
- Working outdoors in all weather (heat, cold, rain, snow, on the water)
- Irregular working hours, including early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Working independently in remote field locations
- Lifting 50–100 lbs with assistance
You must have or be able to obtain:
- Valid Class G driver’s licence
- Outdoors Card with accredited hunter
- Non-restricted firearms licence (PAL)
- Pleasure craft operator’s card
- Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR & AED (as a minimum)
- OFAH membership (required at time of hire)
- Criminal record check (required every three years)
